Religious Intolerance Has No Place at MCC

Discrimination and marginalization are forms of intolerance that are counter to the community that is valued and supported at Monroe Community College. On Thursday, November 5, 2018 a Bias Incident Report Form was submitted regarding a note of religious intolerance that was left on the chair of a student who identifies as Muslim. As an institution of higher education we value tolerance as a way to counter fear and exclusion of others. The diversity of our world's many religions, languages, cultures and ethnicities makes us unique and binds us as human beings.

Individuals who participate in behaviors that are contrary to our values of integrity, excellence, empowerment, inclusiveness, collaboration and stewardship - either anonymously or by way of purposeful intolerance - do not reflect the type of College community we strive to build. We encourage all members of the College community to seek to understand and appreciate the value added by all who come to work and learn at Monroe Community College, regardless of race, class, gender identification or religious beliefs.

Neither intolerance nor attempts at demeaning or intimidating others are welcomed behaviors at Monroe Community College. We must all be prepared to hold ourselves to a higher standard.
