TCC: Tip of the Day - Are your transgender students stuck with their legal name on Blackboard?

First year faculty member, Cole Seidl from VaPa, noticed that his transgender students did not participate in online discussion boards once distance learning started. He wondered if they were uncomfortable posting under their legal name rather than their preferred name.

Thank you to Cole for sharing the expedited process that Registration and Records has put into effect during the pandemic (i.e. including summer session):

Students can email the Registration and Records Office at registration@monroecc.edu with this information:

• Full legal name
• M#
• Date of Birth
• Last 4 digits of the SS#
• Preferred name

Cole emailed this information to all of his students reducing any stigma transgender students might have felt in making the request.

Please note that this will only change the Blackboard name, but the legal name will remain the same on the transcript.
