MCC 6th Annual Model United Nations Program and Class

The Campus Center along with the Anthropology/History/Political Science/Sociology Department presents our sixth annual Model United Nations Program at MCC.  Faculty and staff, we are looking for your support in our endeavors to identify students who you think would be excellent candidates for the program. This is an opportunity for our students to earn 4 (Political Science or General Elective) credits, and gain valuable skills such as:

The development of "life skills" including communication, critical thinking, negotiations and conflict resolution.
An appreciation of the concept of interdependence.
The improvement of writing skills.
The integration of academic subjects traditionally taught separately: history, current affairs, and written and oral communication.
The development of an international perspective and an appreciation of a point of view different from one's own.
The development of interpersonal and leadership skills which stress cooperation, decision-making and consensus building.

Students who are selected will go through an intense program that is challenging, fun, and student directed.  At the end of the program, students will have the benefit of traveling to New York City to attend the National Model United Nations Conference and compete along with 3,000 other students from all around the world

What seems clear, especially in light of the events of September 11, 2001, is that the UN, now more than ever, sits squarely at the center of the most pressing issues in the international arena. Its troubles are windows on the world's troubles; its debates and actions trace the currents of power, tension, and cooperation between nations.  Because this program is competitive and only a selected number of students are chosen to be in the program, we are currently taking applications and conducting interviews this semester.  Students who are selected to be in the program will actually sign up for the class/program starting spring semester.

Faculty and staff, if you know of any students whom you feel would benefit from this opportunity please have them stop in the Campus Center ( 3-126) to either fill out an application and sign up for an interview or to get further information about the program.  If you would like to know more about our program, please contact the me 2544.
