Grading in Banner Survival Tip #2

How the Implementation of Banner 7.3 Will Affect Fall Grading.

We are just barely getting used to Banner so you know what that means….a new version of Banner is about to be installed! The change to the upgraded Banner will not be dramatic (and traumatic) like the change from SIS to Banner but it will affect our fall grading schedule. In September the grade due date was moved from noon on December 27 to noon on December 26. Since everyone can grade from home in their jammies, this won’t be too inconvenient.  Finals are over on December 21 and the majority of our courses do not give finals so their last class day will be December 15.

Banner implementation will take place during the Christmas break (be glad you don’t work in Computing because it is a ‘no jammies in the office’ policy for them.)  Fall grades will be accepted until NOON on Tuesday, December 26. The Web will close at noon and we will begin running our end of term processes which include rolling the grades to academic history, calculating GPAs, running the repeat course program, running probation/suspension lists and printing grade reports to be mailed to the students. At 3:00 on 12/26 the current version of Banner will be closed completely and the 7.3 Banner upgrade will begin loading.

THEREFORE, IT IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN EVER TO GET OUR GRADES IN BY THE NOON, DECEMBER 26th DEADLINE. This semester, any grades that aren’t in the system by noon will not be included in the end of term processing as this processing will start right after the noon deadline. Also, the system will be shut down for Banner installation during the week of Christmas break so no grades can go into the system until AFTER the upgrade to Banner 7.3. No grades can be input from noon December 26 through January 1, 2007.

Late grades will not be reflected on the Web for the students to see and will also hold up December graduations as well as cause errors in calculations for GPAs, Dean’s List, and probation/suspension lists. There will be staff on campus on 12/26 (any beyond) from Registration and Records, Graduation Certification and the Computing Center, all madly trying to get the end of the year reports run before the current version of Banner is laid to rest.

For the first time, the grade due deadline is a concrete deadline because the system will be shut down and nothing can be entered. If you don’t get your grades in before the system shuts down there is nothing anyone can do until January 2 when the system comes back up.

It’s like being late to catch a plane---you may have the world’s most understandable and logical reason why you were late but once the plane has taken off there is nothing anyone can do. Both the passengers with stupid excuses and the ones with completely acceptable excuses will be standing side by side waving as the grading plane soars into the clouds. Next available flight? January 2.
