SUNY SSTF and Achieving The Dream (ATD) Virtual Workshop Series

Between July and November 2020, a number of faculty and staff were able to participate in workshops related to student success and guided pathways implementation. I encourage you to review the descriptions below and if you are interested, you can access the webinar recording and slide links in the attached document. In the last year, the quality of online professional development has significantly increased since face-to-face options were not available. If you haven't experienced the change, you should try one of these. It will also present an opportunity to stop and reflect on how your work connects with student success at MCC.

The SUNY SSTF and ATD interactive virtual workshop facilitators provided practical information and focused on a holistic approach for colleges systems, instruction, services, and supports for student success. Below you will find a description of each workshop.

Holistic Student Supports Refresher

This workshop covered an overview of foundational principles and concepts of holistic student supports with emphasis on equity and the integration of academic and personal supports. This workshop also included discussion of what we have learned in higher education about supporting students through the pandemic response.

Data Informed Decision Making

This workshop focused on using institutional data to inform student support decisions and strategies. Discussion included using data to better understand the student body, to identify momentum and loss points in college processes, and equity gaps in institutional outcomes. This workshop also explored quantitative and qualitative methods to identify and understand student need at the institution, especially considering the COVID-19 pandemic.

Engaging and Supporting Faculty

This workshop shared approaches to implementing a holistic approach for student success by engaging faculty as critical partners. The emphasis of this workshop was on faculty development and creating opportunities for collaboration across academics and student affairs in support of institutional student success efforts. Strategies for supporting faculty in a COVID-19 environment were also included.

Culturally Responsive Teaching

This workshop discussed the foundational aspects and practices of culturally responsive teaching as a key method to centering equity and supporting student success. Focus included strategies for integrating culturally responsive practices in any classroom and across modalities.

Mapping and Aligning Student Success Work

This workshop focused on the importance of mapping and aligning student success work across an institution to facilitate engagement and progress. Emphasis included strategies for aligning placement, co-requisite models, and guided pathways reforms with other student success work at the college. Discussion included strategies to keep student success work progressing in an overwhelming COVID-19 environment.

Capstone: Key Strategies in Addressing Equity Gaps

This workshop focused on the role of data, strategic alignment, holistic supports, and teaching and learning (including professional learning) to close equity gaps. This capstone workshop included key strategies from previous workshops and best practices from other areas to focus on ways colleges can address equity issues on their campuses.
