MCC to Observe Juneteenth on Friday, June 18

MCC will close on Friday, June 18, 2021 in observance of Juneteenth, which falls on Saturday, June 19.

Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, when the news of liberation came to Texas more than two years after President Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation went into effect on January 1, 1863. African Americans across the state were made aware of their right to freedom on this day when Major General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston announcing the end of the Civil War and that all enslaved were now free.

In October 2020, Governor Andrew M. Cuomo signed into law legislation designating Juneteenth as an official public holiday in New York state. In April 2021, the SUNY Board of Trustees approved a resolution to add Juneteenth as a holiday for New York State employees.

As members of the MCC community, we observe Juneteenth to commemorate the ending of slavery in the United States, to examine the roots of racial inequality and injustice, and to eradicate racial inequality and injustice in our community through our shared commitment to our MCC values: integrity, excellence, empowerment, inclusiveness, collaboration and stewardship.
