Four Health Care, Business Leaders Join MCC Alumni Hall of Fame
MCC celebrated the success of four inspiring alumni at last week's 29th annual Salute to Excellence dinner at the Joseph A. Floreano Rochester Riverside Convention Center. Lloyd G. Brown, MD '91, Mark R. Kulzer '76, Selma Mujezinovic, DNP '00, and Arlene Nanry, RN '03 were inducted into the MCC Alumni Hall of Fame and honored for their professional achievement, support of MCC, and giving back to their respective communities. The event was hosted by the Monroe Monroe Community College Foundation.
Brown is an assistant professor and surgeon in the Department of Liver Transplant and Hepatobiliary Surgery at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School. His research interests include surgical innovation and augmented reality, artificial intelligence/machine learning and surgical instrument development. He is involved in a global surgery mission in Rwanda. After studying biology at MCC, Brown earned a bachelor of arts degree from the University of Rochester and a doctorate from the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry. He completed his general surgery residency at The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio and a transplant fellowship at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Mich.
Kulzer is president and founder of Klein Reinforcing Services, the largest supplier/fabricator of reinforcing bars in Monroe and surrounding counties. Kulzer graduated from MCC with an associate in applied science degree in civil technology and soon after began his career as a draftsman at Allied Rochester. A member of the MCC Foundation's President's Circle, Kulzer stays connected with MCC as a guest speaker and supporter of the Foundation's Gold Star Gala and Scholarship Open. He gives back to the community as a member of the American Association of Subcontractors. In March, he received a lifetime achievement award from the Builders Exchange of Rochester.
Mujezinovic serves as a family nurse practitioner and advanced practice provider chair for Rochester Regional Health System where she oversees 1,000 advanced practitioners providing health care in 13 counties. At MCC, Mujezinovic became a member of the Alpha Theta Iota Chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society and later the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nurses. After earning her associate in applied science degree in nursing from MCC, Mujezinovic earned a bachelor of science degree in nursing from The College at Brockport, a master of science degree with a major in family nurse practitioner and a doctorate of nursing practice degree from St. John Fisher College. She helps educate future health care professionals as an adjunct faculty member at St. John Fisher College. She gives back to MCC by partnering on recruitment-related efforts.
After earning an MCC associate of applied science degree in nursing. Nanry entered the oncology field as a registered nurse at Unity (Park Ridge) Hospital. Years later, Nanry discovered her passion for hospice nursing and today provides care through the Visiting Nurse Service of Rochester and Monroe County/UR Medicine Home Care. She is the impetus behind the Story of Hope Comfort Care Home, for families seeking end of life care. She encourages prospective nursing students to go to MCC for its affordability and excellent education, noting how graduates achieve high pass rates on licensure exams. Nanry is the recipient of numerous awards including the Kennedy Fellow Award, National Association of Hispanic Nurses Award, and the Gertrude Mitchell Memorial Scholarship Award. She is also a member of the Hospice and Palliative Care Association.
The MCC Alumni Hall of Fame was established in 1992 to honor the outstanding achievements of MCC graduates for their professional success, service to the community, and support of MCC and the MCC Foundation. Including the newest inductees, there are 103 members of the hall of fame.
