Tricks & Tips: Employee Parking Lots and License Plate Readers


The Parking Services Office understands there have been some challenges and frustrations since the installation of automated gate systems on some of our parking lots.  To help increase your ability to enter employee parking lots more efficiently, we would like to share some tricks and tips when entering gated parking lots equipped with automated License Plate Readers (LPR).

To help the LPR better read of your license plate:
  • Ensure your license plate is free from obstruction.
  • Position your vehicle more towards the center of the entrance lane.  An arrow marking on the pavement can be used as a target to drive over it.
  • Leave some distance between you and the vehicle ahead of you.  Your vehicle may be blocking the LPR’s ability to read the license plate on the vehicle in front of you.
Examples why the LPR may not read your license plate:
  • License plate is snow covered;
  • License plate is dirty or covered with road salt;
  • Vehicle is too close to the reader (see vehicle position above);
  • Vehicle behind you is too close to read your license plate;
  • Sun glare;
  • LPR is reading the license plate frame as part of your plate;
  • License plate is not mounted properly or is not flush with the vehicle;
  • Vanity plates (Parking Services is working with our vendor to find a solution).

You have two options if the LPR does not read your license plate:
  • Scan your employee ID on the card access device positioned at the gate;
  • Press the intercom button to speak with a Parking Services employee who will be happy to open the gate.
