STAGE Students Graduate From MCC

Sixty students who dropped out of high school will graduate this week from a Monroe Community College program.

MCC’s STAGE (Skills, Training, Academics, Growth, Employment) program educates men and women 17 to 21 years old who did not complete high school and are seeking career guidance and self-direction. The program prepares students to take the GED, apply for college and gain worthwhile employment. In addition, STAGE helps students develop self-esteem and personal values, manage stress, and learn effective budget and parenting skills.

The students who successfully completed the 2003-04 program will be honored during a 10:30 a.m. ceremony Thursday, Aug. 12 in Monroe A & B in the Warshof Conference Center at MCC. Faculty, staff and students are welcome to join STAGE students and their families and friends. Keynote speaker will be Janet Glocker, vice president, Academic Services for MCC.

Of this year’s students who tested for their GED, 62 percent passed; 17 students have applied for college and another 21 already have jobs. “What’s even more compelling,” said Samson Olaode, director of STAGE, “is that all 60 of these students have chosen a life that is not on the streets. They want a better life for themselves and their families.”

He added: “The success of the program is credited to the dedication and hard work of the wonderful staff and the support of Monroe Community College.”

STAGE is funded by the MCC Foundation, New York State Department of Labor, Rochester City School District and RochesterWorks.
