MCC Swimmers Sweep Regional Titles

The Monroe Community College men's and women's swimming and diving teams put on a dominating performance over the weekend, sweeping the Region III/Northeast District Championships at MCC.

The men's team finished with 594 points, more than 200 ahead of second-place Erie Community College.  The women's team was just as dominant, scoring 543 points to easily out-distance Jamestown CC.

Head coach Dan Dubois expected many meet and regional records to fall, and his swimmers certainly didn't disappoint. Led by Kazuma Uda, the Region III Male Swimmer of the Year, and Mateusz Frucz, the Tribunes set 16 records.

Uda was a force every time he hit the water.  The freshman from Sagagakeun, Japan set meet and regional records in the 400 IM (4:10.32) and the 200 breaststroke (2:10.05) and a meet record in the 200 IM (1:55.51). He also set meet and region records in the 200 freestyle (1:44.70) while swimming the lead leg for MCC's winning 800 free relay team.  That record broke the mark set by Frucz earlier in the day.

The sophomore from Sosnowiec, Poland also had a meet to remember.  Frucz set meet and regional records in the 1650 free (17:02.23) and the 500 free (4:46.58).

Some relay teams also set meet records for the men. The 800 free relay team of Uda, David Kilmer, Stefan Crain, and Frucz was first in 7:18.25.  Also breaking marks were the 200 free relay team of Uda, Kian Ashby, Kilmer and Frucz and the 400 medley relay team of Uda, Ashby, Frucz, and Kilmer.

There were a number of double-winners on the women's side.  Caitlin Robison was victorious in the 500 free (5:48.40) and the 100 butterfly (1:06.06) while Cathleen Swartz won the 200 free (2:04.51) and the 100 free (56.66). Also, Melissa Ashby took first in the 100 breaststroke (1:11.72) and the 200 breaststroke (2:37.73). Winning individual events for the women were Jaclyn Cowles in the 200 IM (2:24.66) and Stephanie Toth in three-meter diving (328.35 points).

The women's relay teams dominated the meet.  Winners were the 200 free relay (Robison, Kathryn Hores, Amy Buisman, and Swartz), the 400 medley relay (Buisman, Ashby, Robison, Swartz), the 200 medley relay (Buisman, Ashby, Robison, Swartz), the 800 free relay (Elaina Burns, Hores, Ashby, Buisman), and the 400 free relay (Robison, Hores, Ashby, Swartz).

Other winners on the men's side were David Kilmer in the 100 butterfly (56.72) and the 200 butterfly (2:22.60), Casey Degon in the 100 breaststroke (1:04.13), and Josh Brewer in one-meter diving (399.60).  Also victorious were the 200 medley (Mac Hollenbeck, Degon, Matthew Zeitler, Kian Ashby) and 400 free (Frucz, Ashby, Kilmer, Uda) relay teams.

Dubois was named the Region III Men's Coach of the Year.
