Goodbye MCC Upward Bound Seniors—We’ll Miss You!

“We are here to celebrate, so you better get in that mode!” declared Ms. Brown during our 15th Annual Upward Bound End-of-Year Awards and Recognition Banquet. Of course, there was plenty to celebrate: academic high-achievers, our events throughout the year, and most importantly, our graduating seniors.

MCC President Anne Kress recognized senior Mohamud Mohamed for completing the first MCC Scholar’s Day presentation featuring an Upward Bound student, as Mohamud worked with tutor Thad Schickling exploring the topic of Gene Sharing. Rosetta Washington, an Upward Bound alum who graduated high school in 2008 and is currently pursuing a Master’s Degree in Social Work, congratulated the seniors in her “Hall of Fame” speech, reminded seniors that the Upward Bound staff will always be here to support them, and told them that college will grow and change them in incredible ways.

We even heard a crowd-riling musical and rap performance featuring seniors Zhana Thompson, Stoney Reed, and Dennis Smith. Backed by staff and musicians Mr. Mike and Mr. Paul, the students wrote and performed a song reminiscing on their Upward Bound years, from ZooBoo to the college tour to the Amazing Maize Maze. The song also claimed the seniors were “blowing up like a club on a Tuesday,” calling out the bright potential of our graduates.

Towards the end of the event, we recognized our award-winning students who achieved at least a 3.0 GPA and 150 program participation hours:

Outstanding Freshmen: Isabel Hernandez and Alyssa Swartz
Outstanding Sophomores: Taniah Kendrick-Wallace and Daimonique Singleton
Outstanding Juniors: Daneisha Samuels and Nijah Rambo
Resiliency Award: Kiana Brock
Students of the Year: Nikita Tucker and Jyare Carter

In addition, we also inducted Rosetta Washington into the Upward Bound Hall of Fame. Rosetta not only achieved her goal of a college degree, but she has continued to have a positive effect on her community.

We can’t wait to see where our seniors move on to, and hope they remember they will always have a home in Upward Bound.
