Rwandan Genocide 25th Anniversary Art Exhibit

In honor of the 25th anniversary of the Rwandan genocide and in partnership with MCC's Mercer Gallery, the Holocaust, Genocide, and Human Rights Project is proud to offer an exhibit of student artwork reflecting on and educating about the genocide. Through a wide variety of mediums and technical and conceptual approaches, the pieces on display provide a provocative educational experience.

Mercer Gallery and the Project will host an exhibit opening from 5-7pm on Thursday, February 28th, at which Buffalo State Distinguished Professor of Service in Theater Drew Kahn will speak on the use of the arts to educate about genocide. With Buffalo State's Anne Frank Project, Kahn facilitates the Drama-Based Education: Training Teachers in Rwanda program that brings U.S. students to Rwanda where they use drama to investigate conflict resolution. Kahn teaches acting, voice, movement and directs main stage productions. He has been awarded the President's Award for Excellence in Teaching and the Kennedy Center Award. He is the Founding Director of The Anne Frank Project, a multi-layered social justice initiative that utilizes the wisdom of Anne Frank as a springboard for the intense examination of genocide, bullying and intolerance through the lens of storytelling and performance. With an expertise in devised theatre, he presents and teaches internationally on the universal language of theater and the intersection of storytelling, conflict resolution and reconciliation--most recently in Rwanda, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, New Zealand, Greece, Croatia, Morocco and Turkey. Kahn has extensive acting experience in regional theatre, off-Broadway, feature film and television including hosting ABC television's AM Buffalo for six years. He received an MFA from Southern Methodist University and a BA from San Diego State University.
