Volunteers Make Alumni Week and Homecoming a Success!

The MCC Foundation thanks the members of the Alumni Week and Homecoming 2013 Planning Committee for their outstanding effort to reconnect alumni, students and friends to MCC.  Together, we held 15 very successful events and are proud of all our partners within the college community that made these events possible.

Our Homecoming celebration began with the Golf Classic and Luncheon honoring Richard H. Ryther held at Eagle Vale Golf Club raising $7,800 in support of the Student Leaders Association Scholarship Fund.  Golfers and luncheon guests celebrated Dick’s retirement and enjoyed a terrific day of golf.  Thank you to our sponsors Pivcon Inc., Golden Memories, the MCC Association and Tees and Specialties.

SEGA hosted a Damon City Campus celebration and set the tone leading us into Homecoming weekend.  Then, the Homecoming carnival and headline performance by the University of Rochester YellowJackets offered a day filled with fun, rides, good food and great music.  The carnival and YellowJackets' performance were hosted by the Campus Activities Board, First Year Experience, Housing and Residence Life and Creative Arts.

Spirit Day followed with the annual Faculty vs. Students Basketball Game hosted by Athletics and with music provided by WMCC The Fuse.  Faculty, staff and students wearing black and gold cheered on their favorite team from the sidelines.   In the evening, a banquet was held on campus honoring Ashley Socola ’05, women’s basketball player and former life skills coordinator at MCC; Joe Reina ’95, baseball player; and special award recipient Richard H. Ryther as they were inducted into the MCC Sports Hall of Fame.

Homecoming Day was filled with family friendly events, starting with the 7th Annual 5K Walk/Run.  MCC faculty, staff, alumni and community members ran in the rain and raised over $11,900 for student scholarships!  Special thanks to Donna Burke, Dave Ghidiu, Jodi Oriel ’93, Courtney Sprague ’02, Kimberley Willis ’91 and Dawn Quatro ’91, for forming teams, encouraging sponsorship and lending their leadership support to make this our most successful race yet!  Congratulations to our 5K top finishers:   Randy Smith, Kevin Sheehan, Dave Ghidiu, Tariq Getrouw and Xiomara Getrouw.  Award winners were:  Kim Willis (highest fundraiser individual) and Lap for Linda (highest fundraiser team).   John Frontuto was on hand to capture all the action -- view a video clip: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pv9enVpKanM.  Special thanks to all our team members for their enthusiasm and generosity.  They collectively raised over $8,000!  The teams, listed in order of most funds raised, are:  Lap for Linda, The Tekkies and The Trekkies, Engineering Leadership Council, CIS Flash, ResLife Racers, Rockin’ Sneakers, The Yoginis and Worst Parade Ever.   Race results and photos will be posted on the alumni Webpage soon.  Thank you to all the individual and team participants, MCC staff and the many volunteers (including students from Nursing and VAPA) who helped make this event a success.

The 5K Walk/Run was followed by MCC Tribunes games and Tailgate Party sponsored by Sodexo and GEICO.  The afternoon ended with a Gallery Talk in the Mercer Gallery which featured MCC alumni Chris Mostyn ’90 and Rick Nickel ’92, both successful artists.  Their work was displayed as part of the Alumni Art Exhibit made possible by Kathy Farrell and MCC’s Visual and Performing Arts Department.

Alumni took advantage of an exceptional opportunity to learn cooking and wine pairing techniques from Michelle Bartell, Gerry Brinkman and Dave Boni.  Special thanks to Kim Joyce and the Hospitality Department students who helped with everything from prep through plating to make the evening a success.  Our celebration came to a close as alumni from the Classes of the ’60s held their annual gathering at Perlo’s Restaurant and alumni and area dental hygienists came together on campus for the Eastman-Monroe Dental Hygiene Alumni Association Reunion Luncheon.
