Workforce Development Training Benefits 15 Companies, 473 Workers


MCC’s Office of Workforce Development received a $110,000 Workforce Development Training Grant from SUNY for the 2009-10 academic year.  MCC worked in collaboration with the Finger Lakes Advanced Manufacturers’ Enterprise (FAME) to deliver a variety of advanced manufacturing-related programs and workshops to FAME member companies.  Over the past eight months MCC:

-- Worked with 15 different FAME member companies
-- Helped create 15 new jobs
-- Helped to retain 129 jobs
-- Trained a total of 473 incumbent workers

Training programs were held on topics such as Lean Six Sigma; Project Management; Assertiveness; Human Resources Management; Apprenticeship and Technician Development; SolidWorks; ISO 9000 Management Review, Lead and Internal Auditor; Conversation Skills; Visual Manufacturing; Optical Gaging Processing; Coordinate Measuring Machines; Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing; Microsoft Access; Management Skills for Secretaries; Presentation Skills; Supervisory Skills; Finance & Accounting; Crystal Reports; Designing Newsletters; Mazak Lathe; Microsoft Excel; Lean in Warehouse Optimation; and Leadership.

Michael Mandina, chair of FAME, wrote in a letter to SUNY:  “Your investment in our organization and its members has been very worthwhile. Thank you for the opportunity to be involved in a grant that has had far-reaching effects for our industry.”

In addition to the $110,000 grant participating companies contributed an additional $36,696 in cash and an additional $462,227 in in-kind contributions in the form of employee release time and benefits paid while in training, for a total project investment of $498,923.
