Writing Center Workshops

The Writing Center College Hour Workshop "Grammatical Consistency:  Verb Tenses and Pronouns" will be offered on
Wednesday, March 5, 2008, 12:00 – 1:00 p.m., in the following two locations:

Brighton Campus, Room 12-129
Presenter:  Terry Shamblin, Transitional Studies

Damon City Campus, Room 4057
Presenter:  Scott Rudd, English/Philosophy

When does one use one?  Or should you always use you?  Can I refer to me?  Or is it myself?  What about using he or she?  Or is it they?  If you’re confused about pronoun reference and which ones to use when, this workshop should help you avoid these common confusions.  We’ll also have some hands-on practice using verbs:  past tense vs. present tense, passive vs. active, and subject-verb agreement.  After this 45-minute workshop, you will be able to produce writing that’s more consistent and professional.

 Mission Statement
The Writing Center’s purpose is to guide students through the writing process and to provide support for faculty who assign written work.  Tutoring sessions at the Center are interactive discussions that encourage students to make informed decisions about their writing.  The outcome of tutoring should be that the writer, not necessarily a specific piece of writing, will be changed.  Tutors will not write, re-write, or line-edit any portion of a student’s paper. Rather, they will assist with pre-writing, drafting, researching, revising, and editing.  Most importantly, the Center aims to build students’ confidence and improve their writing skills.
