R. Thomas Flynn Campus Center


For his 30-year commitment to the students of Monroe Community College, the MCC Board of Trustees on Monday named the college's new campus center for President Tom Flynn. Hereafter, the center will be known as the R. Thomas Flynn Campus Center.

The resolution passed by the Board of Trustees (printed below) was met with applause and a standing ovation by those in attendance. President Flynn accepted the honor on behalf of all MCC students, the inspiration for his MCC career.

The naming of the R. Thomas Flynn Campus Center was announced at yesterday's ribbon cutting ceremony. A dedication is planned for later this semester.

Resolution passed by the Board of Trustees, Feb. 2, 2004:

WHEREAS R. Thomas Flynn began his career in higher education student services over four decades ago, and

WHEREAS R. Thomas Flynn brought his higher education experiences to Monroe Community College in 1974 as Vice President of Student Services where he assumed the leadership of a fledgling student services program, and

WHEREAS R. Thomas Flynn was instrumental in the evolution of the College’s student development program, recognized as one of the most successful among community colleges, and

WHEREAS R. Thomas Flynn has long championed the integration of the co-curricular program with the academic program in order to maximize student learning, and

WHEREAS R. Thomas Flynn brought national recognition to Monroe Community College’s student services program, earning accolades from peer institutions and organizations across the country, and

WHEREAS R. Thomas Flynn was named President of Monroe Community College in 1999, in which position he continues his steadfast and heartfelt commitment to students, and

WHEREAS President Flynn has touched the lives of thousands of MCC students, mentoring them, encouraging them, educating them and¯by many personal accounts¯changing their lives, now, therefore be it

RESOLVED, that the Board of Trustees of Monroe Community College hereby honors R. Thomas Flynn’s numerous contributions to this college and its students by connecting his name, in perpetuity, with this College’s new campus center; and be it further

RESOLVED, on this 2nd day of February, 2004, that the campus center hereafter be known as the R. Thomas Flynn Campus Center, serving as an example to future generations of Monroe Community College leaders of one man’s unwavering dedication to students and student success.
