ENG 101 Co-Requisite Success Data

In the spring of 2017, the English and ESOL/TRS Departments launched a pilot in which TRS 105 students took ENG 101 and TRS 105 at the same time, rather than taking TRS 105 as a pre-requisite. We have been calling the project ALP (Accelerated Learning Program), but you may also have seen the term "Fast Track," which we've attached to the TRS 105 sections that were co-requisites. To make this project work, the English and TRS faculty team engaged in substantial professional development and curricular work in order to redesign TRS 105 so that it delivered just-in-time-support for ENG 101.

The first three semesters of the pilot produced very positive results. The percentage of TRS 105 students completing ENG 101 with a grade of C or higher increased by 36%, from 18.5% to 54.5%, according to the May 31, 2018" TRS 105 and ENG 101 fast track outcomes 201720-201820" report by Andrew Welsh. Everyone involved is very pleased with these results, and we are optimistic that they will continue.

Fall 2018 is the last semester of the pilot. Beginning in the spring, a new, permanent co-requisite course, TRS 099, replaces TRS 105, and all students who would have taken TRS 105 will be placed into ENG 101 with TRS 099 as a co-requisite support course.

This has been a substantial endeavor, and it would not have happened without the hard work and commitment of the faculty on the ALP Committee, and everyone else who contributed to this initiative. Special thanks go to Terry Shamblin and Bill Dunning for leading the initiative through the 2017-2018 academic year, and to Jim McCusker and Jacob Bodway for leading it this year.

Thanks to all the faculty who taught and continue to teach the co-requisite: Jacob Bodway, April Daniels, Bill Dunning, Angelique Johnston, Elizabeth Johnston, Jim McCusker, Jean McDonough, Michael Nolan, Jessica Saltzberg, Terry Shamblin, Rochelle Watson, and Sarah Wessel.

Thanks also to all who helped in their various capacities, especially Tony Leuzzi, Cathy Smith, Catharine Ganze Smith, Lyn MacGregor, Tina Woodruff, Betsy Ripton and Lyndsey Presutti, and Sarah White, as well as Deans Medea Rambish and Mike Jacobs.

If you have any questions about how TRS 099 works, please feel free to contact Matt Fox, Jim McCusker, or Jacob Bodway.
