STEP LEGO Team takes First Place for project on seasonal water quality and river insects - Team proceeds to Regional Championship

The STEP LEGO team took first place for their project that compared pollution issues in the Genessee River with those of the Sienne and posited a feasible solution at the Finger Lakes Regional FIRST LEGO League tournament last weekend.

The team of ten middle school students – who call themselves the Zuper Klimate Koolerz – designed and operated a LEGO robot and completed a research project to compete in the “Climate Connections” tournament.

At the awards ceremony, the judges had the following to say about the Zuper Klimate Koolerz:

“This team impressed us with their global analysis of an everyday weather problem.  They analyzed seasonal water quality versus river insect population to show the impact of snow melt run-off pollution on river insects.  This team proposed an innovative and cost effective solution for filtering the run-off, thus reducing the impact of pollution on the river environment.”

With their excellent performance, the Zuper Klimate Koolerz  earned an invitation to the Finger Lakes FIRST LEGO League Championship Tournament which will be held at the University of Rochester’s Goergen Athletic Center on Sunday, December 7th from 9:00am – 5:00pm.

All are invited to come out and support the team.  (Wear purple!)
