SUNY Empire State Honors Scholarship Reception Held

On Thursday, May 4, a reception for recipients of the SUNY Empire State Honors Scholarship for African American, Hispanic/Latino and Native American students was held in the Brighton Campus Forum. MCC's Gospel Choir kicked off the event with a rousing performance. This was followed by an inspirational address given by Carol H. Adams, dean, interdisciplinary programs and interim dean, liberal arts. Janet Glocker, vice president, academic services, and Susan Salvador, vice president, student services, presented each recipient with a certificate recognizing their accomplishment.

And then, it was their turn.

Tracy Archie, admissions counselor and coordinator of this event, invited recipients to share some of their stories. It's an annual tradition -- one which never fails to rmove those in attendance. And so it was this year as a young husband stood and spoke of his extraordinary wife -- a woman who works at Hillside, who cried when she earned a C but stayed up late studying every night just to turn it around. "And she did; she got an A," he said. There were others -- a dad who decided the best way to teach his children was to be an example, the foster child, the middle-aged woman who said the path she took in her youth was a whole other story and the former flight attendant who stood up and spoke just to make his father proud.

The scholarship money was nice. However, as recipient Vincent Jones said, "You don't know how good it feels to be recognized for trying so hard."
