Media Coverage of Optics Program, Newly Renovated Lab

MCC's optical systems technology program and the newly renovated advanced optics fabrication laboratory were highlighted in the news media earlier in August.

-- WHAM 1180 News aired a segment with Professor Alexis Vogt on Aug. 12 promoting the associate degree program and careers. "The optics industry is experiencing a severe shortage of technicians worldwide to manufacture optical devices like lasers, lenses, fiber-optics, the list goes on and on," Dr. Vogt said. "Employers around the globe regularly contact me, seeking to hire our graduates. ... We have technicians who are well paid in this region and all over the country because their skills are so highly sought after."

-- WXXI News reported on MCC's work in training optics technicians at the College's newly renovated lab this summer. Fast-forward recording to 2:20 to listen to its Aug. 9 report. The lab includes a state-of-the-art diamond-turning lathe, which is used to manufacture parts with nanoscale precision for autonomous vehicles, missile guidance systems, telescopes,TV projectors and other applications.
