MCC Awards and Recognitions


The following Monroe Community College students, faculty, staff and administrators recently received awards and honors recognizing their achievements. Town of residence is listed in parentheses.

■ Eleven students have received the 2012 Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence in recognition for their achievements and excellence. They are Michael Adams (Webster), Elaina Caven (Brighton), Virginia Combs (Penfield), Jennifer Conklin (Pittsford), Timothy Gaura (Penfield), Alyssa Ginevra (Greece), Bradley Hutton (Webster), Aubree McClellan (Rochester), Jonathan Roman (Rochester), Saul Schuster (Rochester) and Megan Scott (Irondequoit).

The award recognizes students who have best demonstrated, and been recognized for, the integration of academic excellence with accomplishments in the areas of leadership, athletics, community service, creative and performing arts, campus involvement or career achievement. Each recipient receives a framed certificate and medallion, which is traditionally worn at commencement.

■ Karly Tolentino (Greece), a member of the MCC women’s soccer team, and Robert Thomaris (Elmira), a member of the MCC men’s ice hockey team, recently received the 2012 Chancellor’s Scholar Athlete Award for their outstanding academic excellence and athletic achievement.

■   Timothy Gaura (Penfield) has been selected to receive the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation’s Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship, an award that supports outstanding community college students in their completion of bachelor’s degrees at top U.S. colleges and universities of their choice. Gaura is one of only 60 students across the country to receive the award on the basis of academic excellence, financial need, personal development, and breadth of activities and interests. The scholarship will provide up to $30,000 each year to cover educational expenses.

■ Michael H. Adams (Webster) was honored recently with the New York region’s Distinguished Regional Officer Award from Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society for his outstanding leadership and significant contributions to the MCC chapter. Under his leadership, the MCC chapter was recently named one of the top 100 chapters in the nation.

■ Three students have been named to the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society 2012 All-New York Academic Team. As New York region first-team members, Timothy Gaura (Penfield) and Megan Scott (Irondequoit) will be eligible to receive full-tuition scholarships to attend a participating State University of New York institution for the next two years. Anna Price (Rochester) was named to the third team. The honors were based on their academic achievements, leadership and civic service involvement.

■ Trung Nguyen (Penfield) has received the Paragon Award from Phi Theta Kappa. Nguyen, who has served as chapter adviser for two years, was recognized for his significant contributions to the development of student members, his service as the chapter’s advocate on campus, and his involvement in chapter activities on the regional and international level.  He also serves as assistant director at MCC’s Office of Student Life and Leadership Development.

■ Jodi Oriel (Webster) has received Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society’s Continued Excellence Award for her longstanding, distinguished service as chapter adviser. Oriel has been chapter adviser for 16 years and works as assistant director at MCC’s Office of Student Life and Leadership Development.

■ Susan Salvador (Pittsford), vice president of Student Services, was honored recently with Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society’s Distinguished College Administrator Award for her strong support for MCC student members over the past 16 years.
