Scholars' Day Preview

PLEASE MARK YOUR CALENDAR AND ATTEND MCC SCHOLARS' DAY 2019

On Tuesday, May 7th, all members of the MCC community are urged to spend some time in building 12 on the Brighton campus exploring the insights and achievements shared by students and faculty in poster, oral presentation, and debate formats. (The debates will be in the Campus Center Atrium. The posters will be on the Campus Center Terrace.)

No matter what your interests and experience, you are guaranteed to find something fascinating and come away inspired. You have the power to add meaning to the endeavors of these hard-working scholars by showing your interest in their work.

One of the upcoming presentations is described below. Watch for additional examples from other disciplines in future announcements.

UAV Human Rescue Project

Presenters: Ethan Hilbert, Camden Arlauckas, and Robert Herberger

Sponsor: Professor Christopher Kumar (Engineering)

A versatile Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) has been constructed following strict guidelines set by our professor. The UAV has to fly through obstacles and deliver two different types of payloads. One of the payload deliveries is an autonomously-released egg drop, using an Arduino microcontroller and a TCS230 light sensor. The second payload is a launcher attached on the UAV which will release a table-tennis ball into a hoop, 7 feet in the air, from 5.5 feet away. The flight controller on the UAV is a CC3D, with four Hobbyking speed controllers attached to each of the motors. The motors are prop-drive 2826 motors using 8 X 4.5-inch propellers. The frame of the UAV was constructed of Delrin and aluminum in an X-frame formation. Through our testing we have flown the drone and been able to successfully use the egg drop mechanism to release and drop the egg onto a flat platform.
