Professor Emerita Mary Lou Miller, Nursing

I’m saddened to inform you that Professor Emerita Mary Lou Miller, Nursing, passed away on October 19, 2008.

Following 15 years of service at St. Mary’s Hospital, Mary Lou joined MCC as an assistant professor of nursing in 1971. It was her desire to teach at a community college where she strived “to guide [students] to become mature and imaginative nurses who contribute to the welfare of the patient.”

Students and colleagues considered Mary Lou as knowledgeable, encouraging and helpful. Her specialties included maternity, pediatric and medical-surgical nursing and nursing leadership. She advised the Student Nurses Association and often tutored students who needed help to succeed in the program. After taking early retirement in 1992, she was granted professor emerita status in 1993.

Mary Lou was predeceased by her parents, George and Louise Miller. She is survived by her brother, George R. (Christine) Miller; sister, Anne Marie Miller; and several nephews and nieces.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated for Mary Lou today, Thursday, Oct. 23 at 10:30 am at St. Joseph's Church, 6105 Rush-Lima Rd., Rush, N.Y. She will be interred at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Rochester.
