MCC Upward Bound Summer Program finishes up its final week

The MCC Upward Bound Summer Program is approaching its final week of academic classes. It has been quite the summer! Over the last five weeks, we have taken the students on numerous field trips around the Rochester area, hosted workshops on relevant topics in education, social issues, and teen empowerment, and volunteered with the MCC Horizons program.

Field trips have included a day trip to Letchworth State Park, where we went on a tour of the grounds followed by a white water rafting trip. At the Corning Museum of Glass, students learned about the science of glass- making and decorated their own glasses using sandblasting techniques. On July 25th, Upward Bound hosted a Family Night for students and their parents. The event was well attended and held at Frontier Field, where we enjoyed dinner before the Red Wings game, followed by fireworks.

Additional trips have included: a historical tour provided by AKWAABA around downtown Rochester to learn about the Underground Railroad and Rochester’s ties to the Abolitionist Movement; a walking tour of Joseph Avenue to learn about the 1964 riots in Rochester and to explore the social and economic development and changes in the Rochester community since then.

Our final field tri p- and final day of the program - will be to SUNY Buffalo State and Niagara Falls next Wednesday, August 6th. We’re so proud of all of our students’ accomplishments this Summer and cannot wait for a strong start to the academic year.
