HOLD: Help MCC Attract More Adult Students


As you probably are aware, the face of today’s college student is changing.  More and more colleges, including MCC, are looking to the adult learner for enrollment growth – while simultaneously experiencing lower enrollment of traditional students.  Colleges that embrace fundamental principles of enrollment marketing and management in the context of adult students will, most likely, gain a competitive edge.  Adults around the country are returning to college in large numbers to update professional skills and further career advancement.  There are numerous indicators that adult students are non-traditional no more!  Rather, they constitute a significant proportion of the undergraduate student body.

There are close to 6,000 adult students at MCC.  In order to attract more and properly service them, we need to think beyond traditional ways of teaching and delivering educational programs and services to these re-entry adults. 


On Friday, October 4, and Friday, November 1, from 1:00-2:00 pm in the Brighton Campus Teaching and Creativity Center, Room 12-201, members of the Adult Advisory Committee would like to discuss the adult learner movement, and elicit ideas from you as to what it will take to attract more adults to MCC and then design and deliver programs and services that will be key to successful undergraduate experiences for these re-entry adults.  The more feedback we receive the more comprehensive and effective planning will be.  Our discussion points will include the following topics.

-- Who are the adult learners, and the unique challenges they present?

-- Planning for success – meeting the needs of adult students.

-- To what extent does MCC’s practices and policies meet the needs of its adult learner population?

-- Consideration of one office that serves as a single point of entry for all adult students entering or re-entering MCC.
