Dr. Mary Ann M. DeMario Invited to Share her Student-Parent Research on a National Level

In September, Mary Ann M. DeMario (IR) was invited by two different organizations to speak about her research on MCC Student-Parents.  This month, her work will be published in two League for Innovation publications.

On September 14, Mary Ann was part of a panel presentation for the Washington, DC-based non-profit Generation Hope.  Attendees belong to the inaugural cohort of Generation Hope’s new FamilyU initiative, a technical assistance program for colleges who want to address Student-Parents’ needs.  The other panelists at the event were from the Ohio State University and Los Angeles Valley College.  Last October, Mary Ann worked with a global business hired by Generation Hope to help refine the value proposition for FamilyU.

On September 16, at the invitation of the Aspen Institute, Mary Ann spoke at another panel presentation.  Titled “Postsecondary Institutions: Supporting Student Parents,” the event was designed to inform a national audience why data is essential to understanding Student-Parents’ needs and barriers to success.  The other panelists were from Ascend at the Aspen Institute and United Way of the Bay Area (San Francisco).  Mary Ann has worked with Ascend at the Aspen Institute since 2018 when she was handpicked to be part of its Postsecondary Success for Parents Initiative.

This month, Mary Ann’s Student-Parent research will be published in two League for Innovation in the Community College publications.  Her article, “Supporting Our Most At-Risk Population: Student-Parents,” will be in the October issues of Innovation Showcase and League Connections.  To access those and other League publications, create an account on the League's website (https://www.league.org), then follow the steps outlined here: https://www.league.org/node/619159 .
