Family Court: Firewall or Free for All? Lecture by Judge Marilyn O'Connor

The Leroy V. Good Library (Brighton Campus) is pleased to announce that it will be hosting a lecture Wednesday, October 8, 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm. The Honorable Marilyn O’Connor, Rochester Family Court Judge (retired), will be speaking on “Family Court: Firewall or Free for All?” The lecture will be held on the fourth floor of the library, outside of room 2-452.

The Honorable Marilyn O’Connor grew up in Waterloo, New York, and taught elementary school for fifteen years after obtaining her BA in history from SUNY Cortland. In 1979 she changed careers after earning a JD from the University at Buffalo Law School, serving as a juvenile prosecutor in Rochester Family Court and then as an assistant public defender representing children charged with crimes. From 1984 to 1999 she served as confidential legal counsel to Monroe County Surrogate Judge Arnold F. Ciaccio, during which time she helped found the Greater Rochester Association of Women Attorneys. Elected a Rochester Family Court Judge in 2000, Judge O’Connor was the focus of national media attention for ruling that a couple whose four children were in foster care because of their parents’ drug addiction and homelessness issues could not have any more children for the duration of the order. Judge O’Connor retired in December 2007.
