830am-930am

Presenter: Donna Burke (ESOL/TRS)

This Spring, Donna Burke piloted implementing Student Education Planner into the COS Curriculum. Student Education Planner is a tab in Degree Work that allows student to create customized academic plans including prerequisites, planning for summer, coming to college full time or part time, and more. The tool is really useful for developing a plan and then tracking if students are on plan or off plan. This pilot was a pre-post test design, that measured what students knew about DegreeWorks, academic advising and the Student Education Planner before and after the material was presented in class. This session will provide an overview on how to scaffold the information in a manageable way for students to use these tools successfully. Student progress and feedback on using these tools will be analyzed and discussed.

The following is how the AAC&U defines the High-Impact Practice of First-Year Seminars and Experiences: "Many schools now build into the curriculum first-year seminars or other programs that bring small groups of students together with faculty or staff on a regular basis. The highest-quality first-year experiences place a strong emphasis on critical inquiry, frequent writing, information literacy, collaborative learning, and other skills that develop students' intellectual and practical competencies. First-year seminars can also involve students with cutting-edge questions in scholarship and with faculty members' own research." Join us to learn more about College Success (COS) courses and First Year Experience (FYE) at MCC. This presentation will provide separate overviews of COS and FYE as well as their collaboration and exciting new initiatives. Faculty, staff, and advisors will leave this session with valuable speaking points to communicate to students why these experiences are so important for their success.
