Scholars' Day Call for Participation

The deadline for applying to Scholars' Day is fast approaching. Applications are due by February 25.

MCC's 5th annual Scholars' Day events will be held on Wednesday, April 24 and Saturday, April 27, 2013. This year's events include two keynote addresses, with the Damon City Campus Colloquia Keynote given on Wednesday, April 24, by St. John Fisher College professor of interdisciplinary studies, Dr. Arlette Miller Smith.  The Scholars' Day Conference Keynote on Saturday, April 27 will be given by Dr. Robert Ballard, president of the Institute for Exploration, deep-sea explorer, discoverer of the sunken Titanic, and recipient of the National Endowment for the Humanities Medal.  Original research presentations by students, faculty, and staff will precede and follow both keynote addresses.

Details are on the Scholars' Day web site ( https://web.monroecc.edu/scholarsday ).

Once again we are extremely pleased to announce that multiple awards for outstanding student research and presentation will be given in the form of MCC Foundation scholarships.  We anticipate $8,000 worth of scholarships to be available this year.

Attached to this posting is the sponsor's judging form, used to help determine scholarship recipients; we will make all judging forms available on our web site as soon as they are finalized, and this is offered as a sneak peek, and for sponsors who have requested it.

All students and faculty are invited to submit proposals for presentation, and we encourage faculty and staff to support and promote submissions from their talented and interested students.  All participating students need a faculty sponsor, but the presentation does not have to originate in conjunction with a specific class.  Faculty research or other productions are also welcome.

The application form can be found on our web site, along with information about the event, including last year's schedule and program, and information about abstracts (an abstract is a required component of the application).

The purpose of Scholars' Day is to showcase the original and creative work of the college's students and faculty.  Members from every discipline are welcome to submit proposals. Presentations may take many forms, including traditional presentations, panel discussions, poster sessions, demonstrations, performances, etc.  MCC's Scholars' Day events are wonderful opportunities for students and faculty to exhibit their work, to engage in intellectual discussion, and to recognize the outstanding efforts of some of MCC's finest citizens.  Last year, nearly 100 students and over 25 faculty sponsors participated, in addition to a handful of faculty presenters, offering a wide range of topics including "Great Thinkers Thirst for Knowledge: A Comparative Analysis of the Autobiographies of Benjamin Franklin and Malcolm X," "Physical Growth Status of Somali Children Born in the United States to First Generation Immigrants," and "The Design and Fabrication of Unmanned Vehicles." We hope to see your work at this year's Scholars' Day.

Once again, the submission deadline for our 2013 Scholars' Day events is Monday, February 25, 2013.

We encourage you to take part in this year's celebration of academic achievement and look forward to your submissions and participation.

Thank you,

Michael Ofsowitz
