Sealing Our Tradition within the New Campus Center

The design of the new campus center is intended to blend the "old" with the "new" and to seal MCC's place within the College community.

During the design phase, Vice President of Student Services Susan Salvador requested that the new campus center create a "prestigious atmosphere" for learning within MCC. Designers responded by using the College seal as a focal point in the floor pattern of the atrium and north lobby. The seal will serve as a highly visible symbol of pride for faculty, staff, students and the general public.

From windows in the second floor "spine," you may view the 10' diameter College seal below. Similarly a 7' diameter seal is also inscribed in the floor of the North Lobby. The seals are made from cementitious terrazzo. Brass dividers and letters were fastened onto a wire reinforcing, isolation sheet and sand cushion layer system. Pigmented cements were mixed with specifically selected marble chips. Two pigment mixtures were created - yellowish beige and black representing our school colors. The mixtures were poured onto the layer system and set to dry. Rough and fine grinding of the terrazzo material was required for a finished surface.

DID YOU KNOW...
MCC's official college seal was unveiled on December 10, 1962. Judith Ellen Lee, a 17-year-old student from Pittsford, was presented $25 from Dr. and Mrs. Samuel J. Stabins for her design as the prizewinner in a student contest. Ms. Lee's description of the intended meaning of her design was, "Boldness and simplicity combine to represent Monroe Community College with its dignity and singularity. Here is where the expectations of the students, the expectations of the community and the expectations of the faculty and administrators combined for the first time, in 1962, to form the nucleus of understanding, knowledge and achievement."
