Cold temperatures could harm farm crops

Temperatures will dip below freezing for some parts of our area tonight and that means a killing frost for a lot of farm crops. At Powers Farm Market in Pittsford. It was jam packed this weekend with families looking for pumpkins and kids going through the teepees with the jack-o-lanterns inside. Earlier today, we visited Werner's Farm and Farm Market in Rush where they were busy picking peppers before Jack Frost gets them. Farmers say frost at this time of year is pretty normal but 2008 has been a stressful year for growers.

A lot of area farmers are running between three days to three weeks late with their crops. So a hard frost tonight could signal the end of the growing season for tender vegetables like tomatoes and peppers. Bob King from the M.C.C. Agriculture & Life Sciences Institute said, "A hard frost tonight will affect things like cucumbers, tomatoes, summer squash, even pumpkins can be adversely affected.

Jeff Werner at Werner Farm told us, "This year we've gotten an extra week. Normally, an average frost for this farm is about October 1st. Last year, due to whatever reason, it was October 28. We picked peppers and tomatoes almost a whole extra month." Those peppers will find their way to the Rochester Public Market tomorrow. For homeowners, annuals are pretty much done. But unless you live right up near the lake, cover anything outside that you want to see growing tomorrow.
