The Sixth Act Announces Spring 2008 Events

First, on Thursday, March 6, from 4-5:30 p.m., in The Black Box Theater, The Sixth Act will offer its final academic workshop of the year, “Stage Violence.” This workshop will encourage participants to explore the dramaturgical and theoretical impulses behind staging violent acts in a theatrical performance, inviting participants to explore difficult questions surrounding the ethical as well as artistic role that representing suffering can play in our world. As usual, the workshop is free and open to the public, and light refreshments will be served. Metered parking is available.

Second, later in the spring, The Sixth Act will host its first “Student Playwriting Competition.” This competition intends to encourage MCC students to write plays for an audience, to provide MCC students with a competitive venue for their scripts, and to allow winning students the opportunity to see their scripts performed as a staged reading. The deadline for student submissions is Friday, April 11, and the reading will be held on Thursday, May 8, at 7 p.m., in The Black Box Theater. Additionally, our first-place winner will be entered automatically into a nationwide competition, and all of our winners will receive cash prizes.

These events are sponsored by The Creative Arts Committee, and more information about each will be forthcoming. In the meantime, if you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact Maria Brandt at 585-292-3394 or <mailto:mbrandt@monroecc.edu>.
