MCC Daily Tribune

President's Wednesday Message

The spirit of the holiday season finds a warm home each year at MCC. Students, faculty, and staff give generously to support those in need both at our College and in our community.

Many individuals and departments are joining with Phi Theta Kappa in purchasing gifts for children at the Oregon Leopold Day Care Center. Some departments and offices collect funds throughout the year to buy gifts during the holidays, and one office--Parking Services--forgoes collecting fines in lieu of collecting food. And, remember, you can make a Food for Fines donation to MCC's Campus Food Banks even if you owe no fines.

Rather than exchanging office gifts this year, many are contributing to the food banks or to the Dreamkeepers emergency fund, with a goal of sustaining our students all year long. My family will match the first $1,500 in Dreamkeepers donations given at the annual MCC Holiday Reception.

As the weather turns colder, the Downtown Campus First Year Experience staff and students are sponsoring a Winter Coat Drive; Campus Ambassadors are doing the same. The MCC Foundation is collecting coats for children, and Human Resources is again sponsoring a "Mitten Tree."

Employees and students go into our community at the holidays to volunteer at shelters, and AAWCC will use its holiday gathering to support animals rescued by the city's Verona Street Animal Shelter, collecting food and other supplies.

Some have adopted families in need with connections to MCC; others have provided support to community-based organizations that--in turn--support our students, like Baden Street Settlement House. The Spanish Club is collecting shoes, that it will turn into funds to help those still seeking relief in Puerto Rico.

Thank you to everyone at our College who gives so generously during this season and all seasons! If you wish, please use the comments in the blog to let all of us know how we can support your holiday donation drive.

(The Marketing and Community Relations Department apologizes for the late publication of this week's Wednesday Message.)
