MCC Course Helps Supervisors Become Better Supervisors

A Monroe Community College course designed to enhance supervisory skills does just that – giving managers and supervisors critical tools to help them become as effective as possible when dealing with their staff, their directors and customers.

“The course gave me an opportunity to brush up on those skills that mostly came from on-the-job training,” says William Lovett, finance director for East House. Bill took the class when it was first offered last fall. The Supervisory Skills Certificate Program, developed by MCC and RochesterWorks!, targets current and potential managers with instruction on problem solving, project management, team building and communication.

“This program offers workers an opportunity to improve on their business skills to help them become more effective supervisors and to retain a competitive edge in this economy,” explains Jennifer Alfieri, program director in Workforce Development.

Improving job skills through employer-sponsored training and education has become one of the most desired employee benefits available. According to the American Management Association, investing in the employees’ future is more important than immediate compensation.

The Supervisory Skills Certificate Program offers employees training on a topic that usually receives little attention. “In our workforce surveys,” says Connie Felder, Business Services Manager at RochesterWorks Inc., “companies have repeatedly identified supervision training as a priority training need. Many supervisors are promoted based on their exceptional technical knowledge and experience yet being a manager requires different skill sets. Supervisors today must have the interpersonal and organizational skills to solve problems, manage projects, communicate effectively, and build efficient teams.”

MCC grants a non-credit certificate, approved by the Monroe County Rochester Workforce Investment Board, to participants upon course completion. Courses will be held at varying times and dates over eight weeks ending in April.
