Civility Committee:  Engaging Your Environment

"You must get involved to have an impact. No one is impressed with the won-lost record of the referee."
-John H Holcomb

Are you one of the many students I have seen this semester come up to event tables to talk with students or staff while wearing your headphones?  Was that you talking loudly on the cell phone outside of the classroom with a lecture going on?  Do you text with your phone in your face while walking down the hallway?  Are you aware of how disruptive that song is that you are loudly singing?

It’s time to stop and engage with your environment!

You don’t know what you are missing!  You might meet your future employer or build your network for a great reference.  Did you hear us welcoming you and offering to answer your questions the first couple of days of school?  I certainly hope you saw the flyers about the opportunity to win one of five scholarships being drawn at Homecoming totaling $4000.

We are here to serve you, our students; we just need you to engage.  Take off your headphones, say hello or thank you, and look us in the eye as we hold the doors for you.  Try to read our many flyers informing you of programs and services available to you.

Being aware of and not ignoring your surroundings might just make you a few friends or win you a few prizes as you participate in the programs the Student Life and Leadership Development Office sponsor.  Who knows, getting involved might just improve your grades!
