Dr. Gantt Interviewed for Article on Diversity in Leadership Roles

The Oct. 15 issue of the Rochester Business Journal includes an article about the importance of having diversity in an organization's senior leadership. Chief Diversity Officer Dr. Calvin Gantt was interviewed for the article, joining ESL's Adrienne Collier (manager of diversity, equity and inclusion) and Excellus BlueCross BlueShield's Sady Alvarado-Fischer (director of DEI) in providing their perspectives.

Key takeaways from Dr. Gantt's insight as shared in the article:

  • Diversity in senior ranks of MCC is important for student retention and recruitment as well as in championing social mobility and economic prosperity for the masses. Dr. Gantt noted that within the next 5 to 6 years, MCC will be a majority-minority-serving institution.
    • "That focus on DEI is important. We’re thinking about the economic viability of students in our community, about their ability to be socially upward and getting jobs with a living wage."
    • “The more we do to ensure this mission and that students are prepared and brought along socioeconomically, it’s going to be for the benefit of all. The [DEI] work that we do is not just because the campus is going to be changing its demographics. We need to ensure everyone has access to a living wage.”
  • One way MCC ensures DEI at all levels of the College is to frame the core value as inclusion, diversity, equity and accountability.
    • “The only way we create equity and inclusion is if we feel comfortable in speaking up and challenging.”
