MCC's National Youth Sports Program Receives Two Grants

The National Youth Sports Program (NYSP) held each summer at Monroe Community
College received two grants in 2002, totaling over $22,000. MCC's program which
served approximately 400 hundred Rochester-area boys and girls, ages 10 through
16, is now in its 32nd year at MCC under the leadership of Murph Shapiro,
director, Athletics.

A grant was awarded by the City of Rochester for $18,837 to fund student aides
and student travel expenditures for the 2002 sports camp. The Rochester Housing
Authority awarded the program $3,564 which also supported student travel.

Nationwide, the NYSP provides over 69,000 teens and pre-teens the opportunity
to participate in organized athletic instruction, including a wide variety of
team and individual sports and weight training at over 200 college and
university campuses. Additionally, a critical educational component offers
information and guidance to the participants in the areas of higher education,
drug and alcohol abuse avoidance, self-esteem and leadership, health and
nutrition, job and career planning, family relations, and personal
decision-making.

Together, the core staffers of MCC's NYSP program have more than 100 years of
combined service and experience. Committed staff and volunteers have designed
new educational components, provided caring and professional attention to each
participant, and exhibited a high degree of organization in running the program.
