MCC Awarded State Funding, Prepares Learners for High-Need Careers

MCC is among 36 SUNY campuses that will receive state funding over the next three years to educate and train students for high-demand careers, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced yesterday.

MCC will receive nearly $170,000 to develop curricula for cloud computing and to outfit an existing information and computer technologies laboratory with hardware and software needed to provide the education and training. Students will gain practical experience in building, testing, operating and maintaining cloud-based, mobile-enhanced networking and security systems.

The curricula will be embedded in a new cybersecurity certificate program, existing computing curriculum and coursework for credentials that individuals can accumulate over time to build up their qualifications to move along a career pathway or up a career ladder to different and potentially higher-paying jobs. In addition, the curricula will provide pathways for students to pursue different careers in the IT industry.

As part of its Cloud-Based Mobile Computing Project, MCC is also laying the foundation to allow students to complete courses online in cybersecurity and network administration.

People who will benefit from MCC’s cloud computing courses are students seeking to immediately enter the field as IT technicians, incumbent workers who want to upgrade their skills, and displaced workers looking to change careers. The courses will also enable IT professionals to build on their skill sets and stay current with the growing demands and challenges of mobile technologies on computer networks and security.

The Finger Lakes region is projected to have approximately 410 job openings each year in areas related to computer security and information assurance.
