TCC: Seeking faculty to pilot Bb course on retention promoting practices

The Teaching and Creativity Center (TCC) will officially launch our new “Theory in Action” course this November. We are currently seeking a few faculty members to pilot the course and provide feedback before we open it widely.

What is the course?

As a part of my (Gena’s) professional leave project, I developed an online professional development course based on the faculty practices that promote student retention at MCC, known as the CARE practices. This course was initially designed to meet requests from adjuncts for sustained asynchronous learning opportunities.

What will I get out of being a part of the pilot?

In addition to the opportunity to provide feedback on the course, you will dig into the CARE practices, learn more about the theories and evidence behind them. A special benefit of the course is that it is cohort based, and you will be able to discuss how you are applying your learning with colleagues from around the college.

Who is the target audience?

All levels of teaching experience are welcome to join the pilot. The course is designed to meet faculty wherever they are and help them move forward. A goal of the pilot is to learn if we have met that objective.

What is the time commitment?

The course is 9 weeks long, and you are expected to spend about 2 hours each week on the modules. There are four content modules where you will learn more about each of the CARE practices. Following each content module is a reflection module where you will have time to apply your learning and discuss your results with colleagues. The final module involves time to synthesize your learning throughout the whole course.

The pilot will take place from August 29 - October 31.

What are the CARE practices??

A few years ago, Jason Anderson (CHE/GEO) completed a qualitative research study with faculty from MCC who had the lowest rates of student withdrawals in their classes. Through class observations and interviews, four themes emerged as faculty practices that promote student retention at MCC. These CARE practices are attached.
