Exciting updates to advisor assignment process

An exciting collaboration between Academic Services, Student Services, and Computing & Information Technology is coming to fruition. We have been hard at work improving our processes that update advisor assignments behind the scenes. Although more updates will be coming, the first one that you will notice is that when a student updates their pathway, their advisor assignment will automatically update as needed.

Previously, when a student submitted a pathway/program change online, their advisor would be deleted and a new advisor would need to be entered manually. At times a pathway change would not update the advisor at all, and the previous advisor would still be assigned, regardless of their expertise. Now, any change to pathway will trigger an automated review of the student's current advisor assignment without any manual action necessary. If the current advisor has expertise in the new pathway, no change will be made. If the current advisor does not have this expertise, that assignment will be ended and the student will be assigned to an advisor with expertise in the new pathway.

Very soon, a notification system will be implemented that will alert an advisor if a student has been added to or removed from their caseload. More than ever, it is very important to always refer to the advisee listing found in Banner Self Service or Starfish to make sure that the most up-to-date advisee listing is represented.

For any questions about this process or to confirm advising expertise, please contact Amanda Rampe, Technical Assistant for Schools and Pathways at arampe1@monroecc.edu.
