Understanding How Remedial Coursework Can Impact Financial Aid Eligibility

For faculty and staff who advise students, please note:
1. For Federal Aid Programs: Students who are required to take non-credit remedial courses may attempt a maximum of 30 semester hours of non-credit remedial courses and receive financial aid through the Federal Aid Programs for those courses.

After attempting 30 semester hours of non-credit remedial courses, the student will not be eligible to receive financial aid through the Federal Aid Programs for any additional non-credit remedial courses they attempt.

2. For New York State Aid Programs: Students are required to be enrolled in a minimum of 3 credit bearing hours during their first semester of enrollment and a minimum of 6 credit bearing hours in each following semester.

Note:  The “first semester of enrollment” does not mean the first semester of full-time enrollment or the first semester of enrollment at MCC.  If the student has attempted any college level course work prior to their current matriculation at MCC, then they must be enrolled in a minimum of 6 credit bearing hours to be eligible for financial aid through the New York State Aid Programs.
