MCC Student from Puerto Rico Talks About Adjusting to Rochester

MCC student Mikhael Vazquez Galarza is among the Rochester-area students featured in a Democrat and Chronicle article about their transition from Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria.

Before coming to MCC, Mikhael was in his second year at Universidad del Turabo studying fashion design. Now a commercial art and illustration major, he is continuing his education with state support. He qualified for in-state tuition at MCC for the current academic year, easing the financial burden for him and his family.

Typically, students must establish residency in the state for at least one year before enrolling in a SUNY college or university. In fall 2017, SUNY amended the residency requirement to assist students from Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, as requested by Gov. Cuomo. To be eligible for in-state tuition, students must have been enrolled in a school in Puerto Rico or the Virgin Islands.

Mikhael plans to earn his associate degree from MCC.
