DEI and Curricular Considerations

MCC recognizes the need to address systemic racism in ways that bring about positive and meaningful change. In light of recent events, there is an increased urgency for the College community to build a more equitable and anti-racist campus environment.

Throughout 2020, a number of departments, committees, and workgroups have made considerable progress in furthering our commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). As this important work continues, I would like to introduce an initiative to centralize DEI within the most fundamental component of MCC's mission: teaching and learning.

I am convening a group of faculty, staff, and administration with the purpose of developing a plan to embed concepts of DEI within our collective curricula. This work will likely begin with a review of our course and program learning outcomes and consider our Institutional Learning Outcomes. If you are interested in this conversation, please join me on December 7 from noon to 1:00. We will coordinate with efforts already underway by the Teaching and Creativity Center, the New Learning Compact group, the AAC&U grant project - which has focused on intersections of guided pathways, equity in the classroom, and student assessment - as well as other groups with a singular commitment to equity at Monroe Community College.

Ultimately, I hope to see a broad augmentation of our curriculum whereby DEI is largely reflected in our program and course learning outcomes. Our curriculum needs to change to reflect diversity, equity and inclusion, both in how our students experience learning at MCC and how these concepts are embedded. If we are successful in this endeavor, we can ensure that our graduates reflect our values and will be a part of the new vision for our community.

If you have issues or ideas that you're willing to share but would prefer to do so outside of a meeting structure, please reach out.
