Prevent Losing Your Files

Saving files to your desktop or in the folders of "This PC" found in File Explorer risks losing them forever if something happens to the computer. These files are stored in the C drive, which is the hard drive in the PC at your desk or on your laptop.

To preserve important files, do not save them on the C drive. Instead, save them to the M drive or the U drive. If your default save folder is not already your U drive, then this can be accomplished by choosing "save as" for a new document, and choosing a U or M drive folder. For ease of access you can create a shortcut back to the desktop for a file or a whole folder, and you can also put folders in "Quick Access" in File Explorer.

The M-Drive stores files meant to be shared. The U-Drive is a subset of the M-Drive which stores your work files for your access only. Both are backed up securely, so your files will be recoverable if your PC is lost or stolen, infected with a virus, or its hard drive is corrupted.

Unsure how to make a shortcut or use File Explorer? Open the attachment, "A Primer on File Management Windows 10." This document covers:

  • How to create a folder
  • Moving and copying folders
  • Moving a large number of files
  • Creating a shortcut
  • Pinning a folder to Quick Access
