Health Care Partners Renew Commitment to MCC Nursing Program

Local hospitals and insurers have committed $900,000 to MCC’s nursing program, thereby maintaining an enrollment expansion they began in 2002 to alleviate the nursing shortage in Rochester.

Excellus BlueCross BlueShield-Rochester Region, Preferred Care, University of Rochester Medical Center, Unity Health System and The Rochester General Hospital Foundation will each contribute $180,000 over five years to the Monroe Community College Foundation to maintain expanded staffing and infrastructure support within MCC’s Department of Nursing.

“Since its inception, the MCC nursing program has been a valuable asset for our community, each year educating 35 percent of our area’s nursing graduates,” said MCC President R. Thomas Flynn. “The results of the initial expansion surpassed expectations. With renewed support from Rochester’s major health care organizations, MCC will continue to graduate more nurses each year for local employers and directly impact health care in Greater Rochester.”

In 2002, the health care community’s initial gift to MCC’s nursing program resulted in a 40 percent increase in enrollment—10 percent higher than anticipated. This most recent gift will help the college maintain its expanded program and graduate over 135 nursing students per year.
