Addressing the questions that are occurring regarding grading in Banner

Grading in Banner Survival Tip #5:

Addressing the questions that are occurring regarding grading in Banner.

Since this is the first major grading cycle in Banner for all of us, I want to keep sharing the questions that have come up as people valiantly attempt, and usually succeed, in inputting their grades for fall. One (of the many) things that is rather odd about Banner is that YOU are working in Banner Self Service and I am working in Internet Native Banner and we use different forms (aka screens in SIS). Unlike SIS, I can’t get into your grade roster on Self Service because I am not you and Banner security doesn’t allow anyone other than you to access your grade roster. So, as we all continue to feebly fumble forth, here are some of the questions that have come up so far. Oh, and answers too!

Do I need to submit grades for ALL the students at once or can I submit some later than others?

You may submit them piecemeal. The students you have graded will roll to academic history and the ones you have not graded will still be available to grade at a later date.

Can I do grade changes online or via email?

No. Once you grade a student the grades roll to academic history and you cannot change them. We cannot accept grade changes via email because all grade changes require the signature of the department chair. We are still using the Academic Change Form that we used in SIS.

How can I be certain that my grades ‘took’?

I empathize with your need for the comfort and security of verification! Since Banner started I’ve been bringing my 55 year old ‘blankie’ to work with me and putting it over my head while I work. Once you have submitted your grades you can get out of your grade roster and then return to it. If the grades are still showing, they ‘took’!

What if I already graded my students BEFORE you bothered to tell me that I need a last date of attendance for all “F” grades?

Sarcasm deserved and accepted. I failed to TELL you that you needed to submit a LDA for all “F” grades until many of you had already graded all your students. The system will NOT allow you to go back into your roster and input the LDA so I’ll have to get back to you on how we are going to handle that. (You can see why I need my blankie on my head at all times.)

Why aren’t you ever getting around to making my spring room changes? I think I emailed you in September?

This is NOT a grading question so I don’t have to answer it in this column. So there. BLANKIE!!!!
