Outlook Web Access - Junk E-mail Filter

Do you access Outlook only through the web?

Would you like to filter out all the junk e-mail you receive?

Junk E-mail are messages received from unknown senders.  They are annoying and sometimes offensive.  You have the option to turn on the Junk E-mail filter feature to block out these messages.

The Junk E-mail filter allows you to indicate e-mail addresses that you don’t wish to receive e-mail messages from.  You will flag the e-mail messages received as undesired senders, so the next message received from that address will automatically be filtered out by Outlook.

To activate the Junk E-mail filter on Outlook Web Access follow the steps below.

1.   Select the ‘Options’ button in the bottom left corner of the Outlook window.
(Note:  if you do not see this button, maximize the screen with the middle button at the top right corner of the window.)

2.   Scroll down the page, to the section called:  Privacy and Junk E-mail Prevention

3.   Place a check mark in the box for:   'Filter Junk E-mail. Check the Junk E-mail folder regularly to ensure that you do not miss messages that you want to receive'.

4.   Click the ‘Save and Close’ button on the toolbar at the top of the screen.

5.   Now go to your Inbox, by clicking ‘Inbox’ on the left side of the screen.

6.   Review your Inbox and note any junk e-mail messages you may have.  Point to the message and RIGHT click on it.  A drop down list will appear.

7.   From the drop down list, left click on ‘Add Sender to Blocked Senders List’.

8.   This will move the message to your Junk E-mail folder, and any future messages received from the same sender will automatically be sent to the Junk E-mail folder.

9.   Repeat steps 6 and 7 above for every junk message you receive.

10.  Over time you will see a drop in the number of junk messages you receive.

11.  On a regular basis, you should view the Junk E-mail folder to verify only junk messages got deleted.  Sometimes Outlook may filter out regular messages thinking they are also junk.

12.  After reviewing the Junk E-mail folder, RIGHT click on the folder and select from the drop down list, ‘Empty Junk E-mail’.

NOTE:  If you add someone to the Block Senders List in error, they can be removed from the list by accessing Options, scroll down to Privacy and Junk E-mail Prevention, click the button that says: ‘Manage Junk E-mail Lists’, select the drop down list for ‘verify or modify list’, and select 'Blocked Senders', highlight the desired address to be removed, and click the ‘Remove’ button at the right.  Select OK to exit.  Select ‘Save and Close’ to exit Options.
