Mary Ann M. DeMario (Institutional Research) Co-Authors Book Chapter

In January, the book Contemporary Issues in Higher Education was published. As stated in its Introduction:

"A key goal of the book is to center the experiences of student populations who have heretofore not received primary attention in scholarship from our field by amplifying the voices of those who stand to benefit the most from our collective efforts to improve colleges and universities."

Chapter 12, "Understanding Single Mothers in College: Strategies for Greater Support," was co-authored by Cynthia Hess, Lindsey Reichlin Cruse, and Barbara Gault of the Institute for Women's Policy Research, and Mary Ann DeMario of Monroe Community College. The chapter details the time and financial obstacles that single mothers face in regard to persisting in college, the importance of affordable child care for them, and how their postsecondary credentials affect their labor market experiences. In addition, Mary Ann's research on MCC students who are parents was cited as an example of how greater access to child care could dramatically improve students' ability to persist to graduation.
