President's Wednesday Message

As we near the holidays and the end of the year, so many at the College—faculty, staff, and our students—are dedicating some of their time to assure the season is bright for our community.

· Phi Theta Kappa has collected gifts for children at the Oregon Leopold Day Care Center.

· The Visual and Performing Arts Department is collecting Toys for Tots through December 15.

· MCC’s Chapter of the American Association for Women in Community Colleges held its 10th annual book drive, with books going to Theodore Roosevelt School No. 43.

· Human Resources and Organizational Development staff are gathering mittens, hats and scarves on a “Mitten Tree” on display in their Brighton Campus office.

· President’s Staff supported the Baden Street Settlement’s Annual Holiday Food and Gift Card project.

· Our Peer Leaders and Athletics collaborated to collect donations for the Brighton and Damon food cupboards.

And, I am certain that in every office, on every campus, similar activities are warming our December days, providing those in need with the gifts they need most. Thank you to all who give so generously.

At MCC, one gift we value above all others is access to a quality education. This access is embedded in our values: “we create an institutional culture that ensures fair and equal access for all.” In the spirit of the season, I encourage you to give the gift of access. As we have done for the past five years, my family is asking MCC Holiday Party attendees to donate $1, which we will match dollar for dollar. The resulting funds create the Snowflake Scholarship, supporting nontraditional students who face significant financial challenges in realizing the gift of access to MCC. On December 18, your gift of a single dollar can truly make 2015 a brighter year for a deserving student.

My family looks forward to seeing you at next week’s party, and we wish you the very best of the season as the semester comes to a close.

Are there other MCC or community-wide giving efforts that you would like to highlight? Please share them on the blog.
