The MCC Institute for the Humanities

I am pleased to announce the establishment of the Monroe Community College Institute for the Humanities. This public-facing initiative will provide the Rochester community with accessible, meaningful, and culturally relevant programming. Through partnerships with cultural, educational, and civic institutions of the region--as well as local and national scholars and artists--it will investigate and celebrate the rich cultural tapestry of the greater Rochester area and engage audiences that have traditionally had little contact with high-quality public humanities programming.

The programming for our institute will focus on the socio-cultural past and present of our community and/or a national issue relevant to its historical and/or contemporary identity. The events, themselves, will explore a variety of arts and humanities genres, all in an effort to promote dialogue between and among scholars, "cultural producers," and public audiences. Perhaps the most important component of this proposed initiative is that we will collaborate with community partners (e.g., local scholars, libraries, historical societies, civic organizations, literary centers, newspapers, artists, and educational institutions) in the cultivation and execution of each event. Moreover, the events will be held off-campus and in the community to ensure maximum engagement with the public.

As previously announced, our first event, Rochester Remembers the 1960s: The Legacy of Social Justice Activism, will be held at the Downtown Campus on October 12 and 13. Please visit our Facebook page for details.

If you have questions about the institute, please contact Michael Jacobs, Dean of Humanities and Social Sciences, at mjacobs20@monroecc.edu or ext. 3356.
